Program Overview and Areas of Focus:
The Sustainable Fisheries Program is designed to ensure sustainable aquatic food production through collaborative efforts aimed at improving the productivity of fisheries and aquaculture while enhancing environmental, economic, and social outcomes. The program is structured around three key focal areas:
1.Aquatic Food Systems Enhancement
- Increase fish production and sustainable aquaculture to meet nutrition security for rural and urban populations.
- Implement climate-resilient techniques in small-scale fisheries and aquaculture to address environmental challenges and improve sustainability.
2. Development of a National Fisheries Strategy
- Collaborating with government agencies to craft a long-term strategy for sustainable fisheries, which aligns with both national economic goals and global sustainability agendas.
- This strategy will integrate climate resilience, nutrition, technology adoption, and gender equity.
3. Policy Advocacy
- Provide policy support to update the outdated National Fisheries Policy of 1998 to reflect current challenges, including climate change, technology integration, gender roles, and nutritional needs of communities
- Collaborate with government bodies to create an enabling policy environment for small-scale fisheries and sustainable aquaculture practices.
